The other morning I woke up to a new bird sound in our back yard. I thought it was a new songbird paying a visit to the area.
Nope.
Turns out one of our neighbours’ chickens was quickly and loudly dispatched (probably by a raccoon). I heard the cry of one of the two cute little chickens that our neighbour was raising.😔
Later that evening as Kirk and I were enjoying a beverage on our back porch, we heard the strains of Mozart’s Requiem (a Requiem is a musical mass to honour the dead) drifting over on the evening breeze.
Kirk and I sat and listened as the whole work was played, in honour of the wee chicken who didn’t make it. It was really a touching gesture.
And it reminded me that Mozart’s Requiem is one of my ‘bucket-list’ works. It’s something that I’ve dreamed of singing since I was a teenager obsessed with Mozart’s music. Lucky for me, my bucket-list dream is coming true in November when I sing the Alto Soloist part for a performance of the Requiem with the Victoria Choral Society.
It’s been a great motivator for me to start using my voice more fully again, to ‘get my chops back’ into shape for what I’m sure will be a beautiful evening of music-making.
(If you’re in Victoria, and you’d like to know more or attend, please visit the Victoria Choral Society Website) https://www.victoriachoralsociety.ca/concerts/
This whole requiem for a chicken experience, however, got me thinking about how I prioritize and how I also avoid doing the thing that will bring me closer to my Gold. (And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one to do this...)
Why is it so hard to ‘Follow the Gold’ sometimes?
Are we afraid of what we might actually find?
Are we afraid of the success we so desire?
Lately I’ve been playing around with a variety of activities, including some singing, working with my musical score, and taking a more active and focused role in my business and what I’m here to create. And yet, I haven't opened my score to sing a note.... (Gah!)
But here’s another factor - It’s been hot. Damn Hot! The past week or two has seen our summer temperatures really kick into high gear – providing warmer than usual weather. The tomatoes and cucumbers are happy, the lettuce, less so.
Kirk and I have been getting up earlier to walk the dogs earlier (7 am) and taking later evening walks when the breeze is cooler. IT’s working well, tho I’m not sleeping as well as I’d like.
Combine that with the recent Full Moon in Capricorn (it was a doozy!) and an ongoing foot injury which makes it difficult to walk as much as I'd like, (getting sorted by my physio) I’ve been a bit of an emotional wild card.
But I’m reminded again of my previous Love Letter and the message within – Follow Your Gold.
Following your gold isn’t easy – just like the seam of gold in the mine, tracking, excavating, pulling forward that gold involves some emotional release, tracking the seam, and shaping the gold into something worth holding.
Nourishing the circumstances for the Gold to show up is also important. Sometimes we just want to move onto the next thing because that’s easier than actually looking at where you are right now.
Stop. Pause. Pray. Express Gratitude. Nourish.
And so my point of all the writing above is this:
There will always be distractions of one kind or another, keeping you from ‘following your gold’.
The important thing is to recognize IN THE MOMENT and to ask
“Will this move me closer to my Gold?”
And so, that is what I’m doing.
Asking myself “What is the next best step to Following my Gold?”
Sometimes that is a nap. Sometimes it’s turning off all distractions and writing for an hour.
Sometimes it’s listening to the strains of an amazing piece of music and reminding myself that life is brief. It’s time to follow my Gold.

What's Coming Up
Some exciting things are coming together for September, and I’ll tell you more about them in next week’s Love Letter.
As always, thank you for being here. I appreciate you. Here are a few words for you that I spontaneously wrote the other week:
If you need to hear this today - this is for you:
“You’re an amazing human who deserves nothing but the best in your life. Whatever that ‘best’ is for you, define it, invite it, and BE it.
There is so much fear perpetuated in the world right now and you don’t have to buy into it. Be love instead. Let your actions be motivated from a place of love.
And, if you can’t find it in you today, ask for it to be shown to you in new and beautiful ways.
Birds singing, nature, a kind person at the grocery store, an unexpected gesture of kindness, a lucky find - whatever it is - take that as a sign of you being and deserving all the love that there is.
We all have a bloom of love inside us, just like the tenacious poppy growing in the sparse corner of the pavement. Let your love (for yourself, and others) bloom in the most magical way.”
— Written by me in a moment of deep gratitude and appreciation for all that is. —
See you next week!
